4 Supplements I Use To Manage My Endometriosis

4 SUPPLEMENTS I USE TO MANAGE MY ENDOMETRIOSIS

 

We all want to pop the ‘magic pill’ and feel better from endometriosis and that’s the rub with many medical drugs such as painkillers and the contraceptive pill; they work (sometimes) but do so by masking the problem rather than addressing the root cause. …And the ramifications long term can be disastrous. But what if you have no alternative than to take painkillers or synthetic hormones? Well, herbal medicine and supplements can step in to provide a holistic approach to relieving (and resolving) pain and helping you manage your symptoms. It’s not quick and it’s not guaranteed, but for me, it has been worth it.

These are the 4 supplements I use on a daily basis…

1. Herbal medicine

Herbal medicine, for me, has stepped in to replace NSAIDs and prescription painkillers all while working to harmonise my cycle, cleanse my body of excess hormones and relax and tone my uterus.

This has been extremely restorative for me and a key tool in managing my endometriosis successfully.

 

Daily mix

I have a daily herbal mix that contains a blend of calendula, cramp bark, astragalus, Chinese angelica and liquorice, as well as vitex agnus castus drops on the side.

This helps relax my body on a daily basis and support the cleansing process of removing excess hormones such as oestrogen.

 

Herbal tea

Raspberry leaves, yarrow, chamomile, rose, couchgrass and calendula.

This helps to relax and tone my uterus, and I find it makes my monthly cycle much lighter, shorter and more manageable.

Pain mix

My acute pain mix was a process of adjustment and currently contains a schedule 20 herb (restricted to use by only registered medical herbalists) as well as a number of other pain-relieving herbs.

This is my alternative to traditional painkillers that I keep in my back pocket, to be used at the first sight of pain; 2.5ml every two hours until the pain goes away (maximum usage: up to 6 times a day for up to 3 days).

How to

If you are in the UK, I’d recommend medical herbalist Caroline Bulter who practises in Dorchester and Bridport (Dorset, South West England). 

Don’t have access to a medical herbalist? You can always make your own tea blend. There are many online stores available that sell individual tea herbs such as raspberry leaf.

Note: Just because something is natural does not make it safe, while herbs are a wonderful alternative to synthetic drugs, herbal medicine should only be used under the direction of a qualified professional.

2. CBD oil

CBD oil is increasingly being used as an anti-inflammatory, stress reducer and natural pain reliever in chronic conditions and may help reduce anxiety too. For these reasons, it is quickly becoming popular with women with endometriosis.

 

 

While a powerhouse natural remedy, misinformation about CBD oil is rife. In short, CBD oil (cannabidiol) is not psychoactive.

Some CBD oils do contain trace amounts of THC (the stuff that gets people high), however, trace amounts (0.5% THC or less) don’t come anywhere near to getting you high.

If you are an athlete or get routinely drug tested at work, trace amounts of THC may show up if you consume a high dose of CBD oil, so be warned.

That said, herb.co say one would need to consume anywhere from 1000 to 2000mg of CBD oil in a day (that’s likely 1-2 bottles worth) to result in a positive for marijuana on a drug test. They say this, however,  would be a false positive – if the sample were to undergo further tests for verification purposes then it would be found to be negative, as this secondary test is more accurate.

THC-free CBD oil is available if you’re at all concerned about THC. 

 

 

Since I have only recently started using CBD oil, and as I still take my herbal medicine, I can’t definitively distinguish what is having what effect over time. 

My main reason for taking CBD oil is, first, as an experiment; I wanted to try it before I wrote about it, and second, anything I can do to reduce or eliminate chronic inflammation is a top priority for me.

3. Plant-derived minerals

Minerals such as magnesium are known for their relaxation and fatigue-lifting properties. I don’t like taking vitamins or minerals in isolation though, as this can disrupt the body’s delicate symbiosis so I take a full-spectrum complex that includes 75 minerals and trace minerals.

As a mineralised body is the foundation to good health, this is a good place to start. We often focus on the inflammation of endometriosis, as it presents the most pressing symptoms (pain), though rallying the immune system will help your body to strengthen and fight inflammation.

Unfortunately, due to many factors such as soil degradation, minerals that were found richly in our soils are now lessening. The quality of the food we eat is directly impacted by the quality of the soil, so while I promote a varied plant-based diet, it is important to me to ensure my body has the minerals it requires to function optimally.

If you are interested in taking minerals, it’s important to know the difference between plant-derived minerals as opposed to metallic minerals (which are most commonly found).

Metallic minerals are cheap to source, however, contain limited amounts of major or trace minerals and are hard for the body to absorb. Plant-derived minerals, on the other
hand, are fully bioavailable. 

4. Curcumin

You’ll likely have heard of turmeric supplements – turmeric is well researched for its abilities as an anti-inflammatory.

…But it’s curcumin, the active compound found in turmeric, that is doing the heavy lifting – all while making up around just 3% of turmeric!

So if you want the most health properties, look to curcurmin rather than turmeric.

 

As well as fighting inflammation, curcumin is a potent antioxidant that helps to boost your body’s antioxidant activity all while neutralising free radical damage.

It’s important to note that curcumin is not easily absorbed by the body, so it is suggested to take black pepper alongside curcumin which enhances absorption by 2000%

 

Since curcumin is fat soluble, consuming it with a meal containing healthy fats can help.

If you forget to take it with a meal, no worries, you can chuck a few peppercorns and nuts down the hatch instead!

The singing nettles that grow wild in our gardens and countryside are often viewed as a weed and all-around menace, but they are a haven for wildlife, a delicious leafy green (nettle pesto) and potent herbal remedy.

Benefits of Nettles:

Sourcing nettles:

Dried nettles can be purchased online or fresh nettles can be picked yourself if you fancy a foraging adventure:

  • Choose your nettles wisely. Do not pick nettles that grow by the side of a road, are in an area where pesticides are sprayed or that are low-down on a well worn dog-walking route!
  • Take a pair of scissors to snip the heads off and a bucket to catch them in – there’s no need to touch the nettles with your hands, but you can take a pair of gardening gloves if you find it easier.
  • Use a colander to give the nettles a good shake. 
  • Soak them in a salt solution to remove any debris. 

Consuming nettles: 

Nettles must be cooked to mitigate the sting!

For eating, simply saute or steam and treat them like spinach.

For drinking, steep fresh nettles in hot water – 15 minutes if you can’t wait, longer if you can (overnight or for at least four hours according to Wise Woman Herbal Ezine). The hot water helps extract the properties, though you wouldn’t want to have them on the boil as this can destroy nutrients.

1. As an antibiotic  

Before pharmaceutical antibiotics, silver was a known bactericide for 1200 years. 

So when superbugs are running rampant, you can use colloidal silver (which is a safer and more effective way of utilising silver) as a natural antibiotic – and the great thing about silver is that it leaves the good bacteria intact.

Once you’ve cleansed your body of nasties, it’s a good idea to bolster up the good guys with a pre and probiotic supplement. This will help your body get back on the right footing.

2. For animals too

It’s not just us humans that can benefit from colloidal silver – animals can benefit too.

I gave my chickens colloidal silver when they had a bout of flu and Neil from UK Colloidal Silver started his business after successfully treating his pet sheep. He includes a pamphlet in every order with guidelines on usage for both ourselves and animal treatment.

The silver solution can be given orally or added to water. If added to water use purified or boiled water (which has then been cooled), as chlorine will degrade the ionic silver uptake. 

Colloidal silver works well for topical use:

3. As a natural deodorant

*Personally I would never use an antiperspirant because it goes directly against what the body needs to do. 

Those who shave their underarms are likely more at risk from harsh chemicals than those who don’t, as shaving exposes more of the area to these toxins, whereas body hair moves chemicals away from the skin. 

More and more, deodorants and antiperspirants are being linked to breast cancer¹ so take heed!

Instructions: As a deodorant or shaving-soother, simply spray colloidal silver onto the armpit area. Reapply as necessary.

Alternatively, you can use silver gel. Just rub a pea sized amount into your armpit. 

4. As a mouthwash 

 

If you’re looking for an alternative to drugstore mouthwash, colloidal silver is a strong contender. Again with the antibacterial… Colloidal silver can help ensure you reach the areas where brushing can’t – and without the horrifying chemicals. 

To make the silver go further, you can add a few drops to a cap of natural brand mouthwash such as Jason.

6. Pre, during and post travelling abroad

 

Pre-trip:

With a big trip coming up, the last thing you want is to fall ill. As colloidal silver is a powerful antiviral, you can use it to bolster your immune system. 

During trip:

Keep some handy for touchdown to help remedy the stress of travelling and toll of flying.

You can also use colloidal silver to aid digestion, helpful when introducing foreign foods, or when you have no option but to resort to processed or fast food. 

Post-trip:

To help ensure you get rid of any nasties you may have inadvertently picked up when travelling, you can take a course of colloidal silver after you return home. 

7. On the run up to winter

 

Sniffles turn into sneezes and before you know it, it’s an all out snot-fest. Yet what garlic is to vampires, colloidal silver is to viruses. You can help ward off other people’s germs by taking colloidal silver on the run up to winter. 

If you’re prone to a winter cough, a nebuliser may be the best application.

8. As a pathogen hunter

 

Colloidal silver particles are small enough to penetrate on a cellular level, killing all manner of pathogens. 

My chronic fatigue was a result of a virus. Having never fully recovered from it, viral residue wreaked havoc in my body and prevented me from recovering fully. 

So if you feel run down and sluggish after an illness, you may still have some viral residue – even if you used pharmaceutical antibiotics. 

Colloidal Silver was a major turning point for me to wipe the slate clean and get the chance to take a step forward instead of being doggedly sabotaged my attempts to heal and feel better. 

In more extreme cases, colloidal silver has even been injected into the body (tumours etc)

9. For women’s issues 

 

Colloidal silver can be used internally for a multitude of women’s issues; from HPV which causes CIN grade smears and cervical cancer, to Candida, yeast and bacterial infections.

10. Topical use on skin complaints

 

Whether the issue is bacterial, fungal or viral, colloidal silver has got your back and can work wonders on rashes, acne, psoriasis, pimples and other skin complaints.

As spray applicator is an easy way to apply the liquid solution, or you can use a poultice for more extreme cases. Colloidal silver gel can also be used where appropriate. 

11. For your first aid kit

 

Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, colloidal silver works well in a first aid kit for cuts, burns, inflamed skin and insect bites.

Gel is easy to apply, otherwise, keep liquid colloidal silver in medical grade amber glass for storage longer term (six months – two years).

12. In a nebuliser

 

The respiratory system is the first line of defence against airborne pathogens and viruses.

Using a nebuliser is the most direct way to expose these pathogens and viruses to the silver solution and the fastest way for them to reach the bloodstream and get to work. 

With that said, nebilising colloidal silver is experimental, and SilverMedicine.org recommend extreme caution should be taken if a severe lung condition is present and a person is in an extremely weakened state with laboured breathing. AKA Only to be done in hospital under the presence of medical practitioners. 

13. As eye and ear drops

 

Eye and ear infections may be viral, bacterial or fungal. As some ear infections can be the culmination of multiple classes of bacteria, prescription antibiotics are not always effective.

The author of the bestselling book “The pH Miracle”, Robert O. Young, PhD, states that colloidal silver can work well for both ear and eye problems: 

“Eye or ear problems, including cataracts, glaucoma, redness, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, earaches, soreness or swelling of the ears, eardrum damage, hardness of hearing, and (in rare cases) loss of hearing: Use 1 drop of colloidal silver topically (directly in the eye or ear) 3 times a day”. 

As with any new substance being introduced to the body, it is recommended to proceed with caution and do a tester first (1 drop max) to ensure no intolerance or otherwise. 

14. In a nasal spray or neti pot

 

Colloidal silver has been used for sinus problems, allergies and asthma. 

A neti pot, which looks something like Aladin’s lamp, has been used in India for thousands of years to cleanse and unblock the sinus passages and relieve inflammation.

15. On fungal infections

 

Not just for athlete’s foot and nail fungus, colloidal silver can fight fungal infections on plants too. A spray applicator works best for leaves, otherwise, water the roots with a dilute solution. 

16. To wash your fruit & veg in

 

Growing up in the countryside, I’m not one for being overly sterile – but that’s when I know the carrot has been pulled out of the earth, I’ve brushed the soil off and now I’m going to eat it. 

Because of the journey supermarket sourced produce has to undertake, it can be exposed to all manner of pathogens. You can help eradicate these hitchhikers from your produce with a simple wash. 

Also, as many pesticides are water-resistant, simply washing produce in water doesn’t remove all pesticide residue. So this wash works to break down the chemicals and clean it thoroughly: 

  • 1 cup of warm water
  • 1/2 cup of ACV
  • 2 tsp. Himalayan salt (dissolve completely)
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup colloidal silver*  

Leave the produce to soak for 5-10 minutes. 

*If you’re really into it, you can make your own colloidal silver. This will be cheaper for washing produce on a regular basis. There is a difference between making really great quality silver and not so great silver, so I’d stick to a trusted manufacturer when ingesting the silver.

17. As a digestive aid

 

Food fermenting in the stomach and intestines can result in digestive problems such as gas, bloating, indigestion, pain and reflux. Colloidal silver helps to prevent food fermenting, making it an effective digestive aid. 

18. As a home odour eliminator

 

I don’t have personal experience with this one, though I have seen a number of testimonials reporting that spraying colloidal silver eliminates pet odours and prevents pets from spraying when all else has failed. 

19. Topical use on inflammation, swelling and burns

 

Remedy inflammation and swelling with colloidal silver – either as a gel, spray or poultice. 

While research is catching up, silver has been used anecdotally for years to reduce swelling and speed up the healing process by boosting cell recovery. 

Silver solutions are even used in hospitals to save the lives of burns victims – as doctors found it wasn’t the burns that were fatal, but succumbing to infection after. Silver has been found to promote rapid healing of infected or destroyed tissue.

20. As a parasite killer

 

Parasites are prevalent and rob the body of nutrients, leading to ailing health. If you’re doing a parasite cleanse, it may be worth arming yourself with colloidal silver. 

While this is still experimental, there are reports that silver seems to work in preventing parasite eggs from hatching and even killing some mosquito larvae. More research is needed, however, with strong historic use as an antibacterial and antiviral, colloidal silver can help support the body in a number of ways when under strain.

Colloidal silver is a mineral solution with antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties, traditionally used as the ‘first line of defence’ against pathogens.

I was introduced to colloidal silver when investigating the root cause of my chronic fatigue.

As a child, I was treated with a strong course of antibiotics by my GP to eradicate a virus. Yet, the virus lingered on, quietly gathering strength over the years – much like Voldemort. They told me it was Post Viral (Chronic) Fatigue and please shut the door on your way out.

Since the viral infection was still present and the antibiotics had further lowered my body’s natural defences, this double whammy eventually led to a reduction in my thyroid function. In turn, this then set off a chain reaction of other symptoms, such as food intolerances and fatigue.

The culmination of which meant that my body was in a constant uphill struggle to function optimally.

As the years went on, the strain became greater and the symptoms worsened.

At times, I barely had the energy to move, could not stay awake after eating certain foods (wheat and dairy) and had constant joint pain and muscle aches, regular dizziness, blackouts and blurred vision.

I made it my mission to heal from chronic fatigue and so I went hunting Horcruxes, Harry Potter style.

This included consulting with and learning from some incredible holistic health practitioners whose depth of knowledge is vastly underrated and underutilised and doing my own investigation, research and experiments.

I needed clues to what was happening in my body, so I consulted with an applied kinesiologist at the Belvedere Centre. He confirmed that my body was struggling with a virus and suggested a course of Colloidal Silver.

What the Phlegm?

 

I left with a small bottle (they hold a limited amount of concoctions from which they make no additional profit), and being rather gung-ho, proceeded to exceed the recommended daily intake.

This resulted in what I can only imagine was the Herxheimer Reaction, otherwise known as a ‘healing crisis’; where you get worse before you get better.

My throat was if it had been rubbed with sandpaper and then doused with Scotch Bonnet chilli oil and, well, less said about phlegm the better.

But don’t let that put you off… 

The Herxheimer Reaction is not a toxic response to the silver, but a response to toxins being rapidly eliminated from the body¹

NOTE: Your body can only detox as fast as your detox organs can process toxins, so I wasn’t doing myself any favours by going overboard. If I was very weak or had a severe condition, I would not have taken this ‘all-in’ approach. 

Even with chronic fatigue, I never had as much as a cold in years. My immune system held ground as much as it could, thanks to copious amounts of antioxidants. So I knew that this reaction was not just a simple case of catching a bug, nor was it intolerance.

 

My Results: Before/After

 

Within a week, I reached the last drop in my bottle of colloidal silver. It took another week and a half of my system working overtime to finish processing the viral residue ‘die-off’.

  • My muscle aches and joint pain disappeared almost instantly.
  • I began to get my energy back and I no longer felt as if lead weights were attached to the end of my limbs.
  • I felt a new sensation of ‘nothingness’, which seemed weird at the time, but I now realise was just being free from aches, pains and fatigue.
  • Moving forward, my hair, once so thin and weak, grew thicker and stronger.
  • My skin balanced and became reliably clear.
  • The persistent brain fog dissipated.  
  • I no longer feel dizzy or weak or have blurred vision.
  • I can eat wheat without feeling fatigued, dairy without falling asleep. While neither of these are a staple of my diet, it’s not the end of my day if I consume them occasionally when eating out or travelling abroad.
  • Retesting for wheat intolerance, I had built my health back up to where I no longer am intolerant (intolerance is very different to having an allergy). 

‘Holistifying’ my life, now not only do I have energy for getting by day-to-day, but energy to go out and climb, and I even fulfilled a lifelong ambition of trekking in the Himalayas. You may not want to climb mountains, but you deserve the energy at your disposal.

Silver Vs. Colloidal Silver


Before you raid the antique shops for silver, let’s look a the key distinction of 
colloidal silver. 

Colloidal silver is not simply silver particles mixed in water. 

Colloidal silver is an antimicrobial mineral solution made up of silver ions and charged silver particles suspended in distilled water. A bacteria cells ability to survive is dependant on it forming a chemical bond – silver works to disrupt the formation of this chemical bond.

So it is crucial that the solution is indeed colloidal (suspended) and not a cheap particle mix. True colloids can be taken at a therapeutic level and do not cause argyria – a rare condition that turns the skin turning grey and has subsequently given colloidal silver mislead bad press.

Rather than in a chemical compound, the Silver, in the colloidal state, may be applied in a much more concentrated form, with correspondingly better results.

The Wonders of Colloidal Silver
– Is It All True?

 

Research colloidal silver and it won’t take you long to find a multitude of articles presenting the following quote, “Silver kills over 650 different disease-causing pathogens, as well as cancer.” 

While the infection-fighting properties of silver are clear, and there are nearly a hundred clinical studies and independent research reports to boot³, colloidal silver hasn’t actually been trialled against 650 pathogens.

The figure is likely taken from a 1973 study on silver sulfadiazine, published in the journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

Researchers stated in their synopsis:

657 different types of bacteria from 22 different bacterial species were exposed to silver sulfadizine. All strains were inhibited by levels which can easily be obtained topically. Strains resistant to sulfadiazine or multiple antibiotics were sensitive to silver sulfadiazine.

Silver sulfadiazine is an ointment that contains antimicrobial silver, used by hospitals for decades to help save burn victims from infection.

So you can see where somewhat of a leap is made – silver being the common denominator. 

With that said, please do have a look through all the vast literature available on colloidal silver. It’s most certainly not a ‘new craze’.

 

Using Colloidal Silver: 

 

According to the book “The Uses of Colloidal Silver in Health and Disease” by Alfred B. Searle, colloidal silver works best when in direct contact with pathogens for at least 6 minutes. This makes it very handy for topical use; skin infections and various women’s issues such as candida.

Viral residue was the kingpin to my chronic fatigue as it was hindering my immune system. To combat this viral residue, I was instructed to swish the colloidal silver around my mouth for at least 30 seconds before ingesting. This greatly helps the ionic silver uptake into the bloodstream

As a new user, I was told to start with 5-10ml in the first 24hrs. This was just to ensure I wasn’t intolerant to the silver. Then, I could increase to 30ml daily for 5-7 days to boost silver levels before decreasing as required. 

 

The Herxheimer Reaction:

 

Colloidal silver is not a cure.

Silver is involved in the destruction of pathogens. Your body, namely liver, kidneys, skin, bowels and lungs, are the true detoxers and are what process these toxins.

Be warned, as toxins can be stored deep in fat cells (the body’s toxic dumping ground), releasing and processing these isn’t the rosiest of experiences.

The Herxheimer Reaction, often referred to as a ‘healing crisis’ or ‘die-off syndrome’, can occur and is where you temporarily feel worse before you get better.

It’s like having a spring clean; your house will be a complete mess while you’re sorting through the contents of your wardrobe, draws and attic. But once you’ve removed all that excess ‘stuff’ from your home, there’s space for everything to run more efficiently. 

Symptoms can include: 

  • Headache 
  • Flu-like symptoms 
  • Skin complaints (itching, rashes)
  • Flushes

This can last for a few days to a week or longer for more chronic cases.

It’s important to note that the Herxheimer Reaction is not a toxic response to the silver, but a response to toxins being rapidly eliminated from the body.

Since you can only detox as fast as your detoxing organs will allow, it’s wise to take a gradual approach. Especially as the body can often be either sluggish or overtaxed in our modern world of processed foods and stress abound. This gradual approach can help stave off noticeable detox symptoms.

For those using colloidal silver experimentally in an attempt to treat very severe and chronic conditions, the opperative idea is to reach a level of saturation, then maintain an intake JUST below this saturation point. 

 

Occasionally, it is a good idea to adjust tolerance by increasing the dosage level again until this saturation level is reached.

Silver Vs. Colloidal Silver


Before you raid the antique shops for silver, let’s look a the key distinction of 
colloidal silver. 

Colloidal silver is not simply silver particles mixed in water. 

Colloidal silver is an antimicrobial mineral solution made up of silver ions and charged silver particles suspended in distilled water. A bacteria cells ability to survive is dependant on it forming a chemical bond – silver works to disrupt the formation of this chemical bond.

So it is crucial that the solution is indeed colloidal (suspended) and not a cheap particle mix. True colloids can be taken at a therapeutic level and do not cause argyria – a rare condition that turns the skin turning grey and has subsequently given colloidal silver mislead bad press.
