It has now become commonplace to find men from various regions of the world taking on prominent roles in summer blockbusters. While Hispanic, Latino, and renowned Mexican actors have been part of Hollywood for an extended period, it is only in the last few decades that they have truly received the acknowledgment they are worthy of.

Although Diego Luna, Javier Bardem, and John Leguizamo have been prominent figures in their respective countries, they are only recently receiving recognition for their contributions to the film industry. In a previous discussion, we highlighted exceptional Hispanic and Latin actresses like Salma Hayek, Jennifer Lopez, and Sofia Vergara. It is only fair that we now shed light on some of the remarkable non-Caucasian male actors who are leaving a lasting impact.

To honor these remarkable individuals, we present a list of 20 exceptional actors of Hispanic, Latino, and Mexican descent who have significantly influenced the way cinema portrays individuals from diverse backgrounds.

1. Danny Trejo

Danny Trejo, born and raised in Los Angeles, is widely recognized as a prominent figure among Mexican actors. Despite his American birthplace, this Mexican American actor’s face has become synonymous with the world of film. Following a life-changing decision to pursue acting instead of a life of crime, Trejo has enjoyed a successful and enduring career.

During his youth, Trejo frequently encountered legal troubles and found himself in a cycle of incarceration. Additionally, he heavily indulged in drug use. However, while serving his last sentence at San Quentin State Prison, he underwent a transformative journey. Trejo sought solace in religion and embraced boxing as a means of redemption, ultimately achieving victory as a champion in the prison’s lightweight and welterweight divisions.

Trejo’s career took off in the mid-80s, and he now boasts over 400 credits on IMDB. He is frequently typecast as the antagonist in films such as Con Air, Reindeer Games, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Desperado. However, his breakthrough as a leading man came in the action-packed film Machete, written specifically for Trejo by his close friend Robert Rodriguez. This movie showcased Trejo’s talent and featured an ensemble cast.

Bardem gained widespread recognition through his portrayal of the sociopathic assassin Anton Chigurh in the Cohen brother’s film No Country for Old Men in 2007. In 2016, his career skyrocketed when he secured a significant part in Star Wars Rogue One, marking a turning point in his Hollywood journey. This breakthrough led Luna to portray the infamous Mexican drug lord Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo in Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico, followed by a crucial role in the underappreciated film If Beale Street Could Talk. 4. Anthony Quinn

With two Academy Awards to his name, he is widely regarded as one of the most iconic Mexican actors of all time. Starting his acting journey in his early 20s, Quinn has built an exceptional filmography that remains unparalleled.

Quinn became a renowned superstar in the 50s, primarily working as a character actor. During this time, he ventured beyond Hollywood and joined forces with various European directors, earning high praise for his performances in films such as Ulysses, Attila, La Strada, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

After coming back to America in the early 60s, he further solidified his status as an acting legend with successful films like The Guns of Navarone, Lawrence of Arabia, and Zorba the Greek.

5. George Lopez

George Lopez, widely recognized for his stand-up and chat show, has also showcased his acting talent in numerous movies and television shows. With roots in Los Angeles and Mexican heritage, Lopez frequently incorporates his experiences as an American Mexican into his comedic performances.

His career is attributed to Sandra Bullock, who approached Lopez in 2000 with the idea of creating his own sitcom. Recognizing the lack of representation for Hispanic families on mainstream television, Bullock urged Lopez to be the catalyst for change. Consequently, the show titled George Lopez was enthusiastically picked up by ABC and achieved tremendous success, running for six seasons. Notably, it played a pivotal role in amplifying Latino voices and fostering greater diversity on television.

Lopez’s dedication to supporting the Mexican community is evident through his involvement with numerous charities and organizations. Not only has he successfully hosted the Latin Grammy Awards twice, but he has also been honored with several prestigious awards, making him adored by the American audience. Additionally, Lopez’s contribution extends beyond his achievements as he has both produced and acted in multiple sitcoms. His upcoming project, “Lopez vs. Lopez,” will further showcase his talent alongside his daughter Mayan.

6. Pedro Infante

Pedro Infante was an undisputed icon during the golden era of Mexican cinema. His star power extended beyond acting, as he mesmerized audiences with his musical talents, having reportedly released 350 songs. However, his untimely demise in 1957 marked a tragic end to his life, as the plane he was piloting crashed during his journey to Mexico City.

Infante holds such a revered status in Mexico that his work is commemorated through the existence of five museums solely dedicated to exhibit his contributions. Additionally, at least five statues have been erected to pay homage to his remarkable accomplishments. Even today, his legacy lives on, as numerous Mexicans undertake pilgrimages to Mexico City to pay their respects at a memorial constructed in honor of his achievements. It is evident that individuals of his caliber are a rarity in contemporary times.

7. Gael García Bernal

In 2001, Gael García Bernal shared the screen with his fellow Mexican actor Diego Luna in Alfonso Cuarón’s unexpected success, Y Tu Mamá También. This film proved to be a turning point for Bernal, as he later gained international recognition by portraying Che Guevara in The Motorcycle Diaries in 2004.

Despite being a renowned actor, Bernal still manages to balance his schedule between working on major studio films in America and smaller independent productions in Mexico. His upcoming project involves starring in the Disney series Werewolf by Night, which is based on the Marvel Comics character with the same name.

8. Pancho Villa

Pancho Villa, a prominent figure in the Mexican Revolution, briefly ventured into the world of acting, portraying himself in movies. These films provided him with the opportunity to shape his own story, portraying him as the heroic protagonist fighting for the rights of all Mexicans. In addition, Villa granted numerous interviews to Hollywood reporters, where he extensively emphasized his contributions to the revolution. Unfortunately, his life was tragically cut short by an assassination in 1923.

Numerous films have depicted the life of Villa, but the most triumphant one was And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself, where a youthful Antonio Banderas played the role of Villa.

9. Eugenio Derbez

Eugenio Derbez, a remarkable Mexican actor, has gained recognition among American viewers for his performances in popular films such as “How to Be a Latin Lover,” where he starred alongside Salma Hayek and Kristen Bell, as well as the 2018 remake of the beloved 80s classic “Overboard.” Additionally, he demonstrated his immense talent and dedication through his pet project, “Instructions Not Included,” a film in which he took on multiple roles as a writer, director, actor, producer, and editor. This remarkable film achieved great success, grossing over $100 million and sparking widespread curiosity about Eugenio Derbez’s exceptional abilities.

Despite initially achieving success in Hollywood, his career has not unfolded as expected. Although he still secures acting roles, he has been unable to fully capitalize on his initial triumph. However, he has managed to find ample opportunities as a voice-over actor, particularly in the realm of dubbing English-language animated movies. Notably, he has lent his voice to the Spanish Latin American versions of popular franchises like Shrek (voicing Donkey), Dr. Dolittle (voicing Lucky), and Mulan (voicing Mushu).

10. Antonio Banderas

Antonio Banderas, a renowned actor hailing from Spain, has enjoyed a prosperous and enduring career that shows no signs of waning. He embarked on his acting journey in the 1980s, but it was not until Madonna brought him to the United States in the 1990s that he began to secure significant roles. Despite the challenge of learning English on the go, Banderas landed prominent roles in iconic films of the 90s, such as The Mask of Zorro, Philadelphia, Interview With the Vampire, Desperado, and Assassins.

Despite facing some setback with The 13th Warrior, he made a comeback in the 2000s with the action-packed Once Upon a Time in Mexico, where he shared the screen with Salma Hayek and Johnny Depp. He further impressed audiences with his role in the horror film The Skin I Live In and the Spanish movie Pain and Glory. Today, he remains one of the prominent Spanish actors thriving in Hollywood.

11. Gabriel Soto

Prior to appearing on camera, Gabriel Soto had a successful career as a male model and was also part of the popular Mexican boy band Kairo. However, his fame and recognition have mainly been limited to Mexico, making him relatively unknown internationally. Notably, he has starred in various renowned Mexican telenovelas such as “Las Vías Del Amor” with 220 episodes, “Vino El Amor” with 142 episodes, and “Un Refugio Para El Amor” with 165 episodes.

In Mexico, Soto is regarded as a soap star, which might not be esteemed elsewhere. However, these actors are highly adored by fans in Mexico and can earn a lucrative income from their popularity.

12. Ricardo Montalbán

With a career that has lasted nearly 70 years, Ricardo Montalbán has become an iconic figure in Mexican cinema. Throughout his extensive journey, Montalbán showcased his versatility by starring in a wide range of movies and TV series across different genres. Initially, he began his acting journey in Mexico, taking on minor roles in independent productions during the 1940s and 1950s. Eventually, he expanded his horizons and ventured into the European film industry, leaving his mark in several movies during the 1960s.

After making appearances in various American TV series, he quickly gained recognition when he secured leading roles in the Planet of the Apes sequels, Escape from the Planet of the Apes and Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.

Montalbán’s career soared as he took on lead roles in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn, The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, and the immensely popular TV series Fantasy Island, which captivated audiences from 1977 to 1984. Later, he made a triumphant return to television and became a prominent figure in commercials. Sadly, he bid farewell to the world at the age of 88 in 2009.

13. John Leguizamo

John Leguizamo, a Latin American hailing from Columbia, was brought up in New York. Throughout his impressive four-decade-long journey in the film industry, he has achieved remarkable success. Among his notable performances, he stands out in movies such as Romeo + Juliet, Carlito’s Way, Summer of Sam, and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. However, he also faced a setback in his career when he starred in the ill-fated adaptation of Super Mario Bros. alongside Bob Hopkins, which nearly derailed his path to success.

Although he often plays cameo or minor roles in his recent works, one thing is for sure: if Leguizamo makes an appearance, whatever you’re watching instantly becomes more enjoyable.

14. Jorge Negrete

Jorge Negrete, a Mexican entertainer, pursued a successful career in both singing and acting. Following his military service, Negrete’s passion for music led him to relocate to the United States where he delved into the realms of singing and acting. Notably, he appeared in more than 40 films and embarked on numerous tours throughout Latin America. One of his frequent musical endeavors involved performing rancheras, which are traditional Mexican folk songs, alongside the trio known as Los Tres Calaveras.

In 1934, he played a significant role in establishing the Mexican National Association of Actors (ANDA). However, his membership was revoked in 1953 following assault charges filed against him, which ultimately brought his acting career to a halt. Sadly, he passed away shortly after at the age of 42 due to complications arising from hepatic cirrhosis.

15. Benicio del Toro

Benicio del Toro, a Puerto Rican superstar, gained recognition for his remarkable portrayal of the incomprehensible criminal Fred Fenster in the 1995 crime thriller The Usual Suspects. Whenever he appears on screen, it becomes impossible to divert your attention. This film significantly elevated his status, leading him to secure roles in cult favorites like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Snatch, as well as major Hollywood productions including Traffic, The Wolfman, and Sin City.

With his attractive appearance and captivating charisma, Garcia has established himself as a prominent figure in the film industry for more than four decades.

After almost ten years, he finally received a breakthrough opportunity when he landed a role in Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables, alongside esteemed actors Robert De Niro, Kevin Costner, and Sean Connery. Garcia showcased his exceptional talent and proved that he possessed the qualities necessary to become a successful star.

Afterward, Garcia has appeared in numerous blockbuster movies, such as When a Man Loves a Woman, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Black Rain, Father of the Bride, and Smokin’ Aces. His filmography boasts an impressive array of roles, having graced the screen in Gone in 60 Seconds, Fury, Million Dollar Baby, Crash, World Trade Center, End of Watch, and American Hustle. As an esteemed Latino actor, Pena’s talent shines brightly.

Pena’s talents have been showcased in Marvel’s Ant-Man films and he has portrayed the real-life DEA agent Kiki Camarena in Narcos: Mexico. He is an exceptional actor who is currently reaching the peak of his career.

18. William Levy

While Cuban actor William Levy may not have the same level of fame as many other actors on this list, he has gained heartthrob status in Mexico and is often referred to as the “Latino Brad Pitt.” His impressive acting career includes starring roles in some of the country’s most popular telenovelas, such as Cuidado Con El Angel (consisting of 194 episodes) and Triunfo Del Amor (spanning 172 episodes).

Although Levy has made appearances in multiple Hollywood movies, his roles have predominantly been minor and the films themselves have not been particularly remarkable, with the exception of Girls Trip, which is undeniably hilarious. Despite maintaining a steady presence in Mexico, where he initially gained recognition as a model, it is inevitable that Levy will eventually secure a significant role in America that propels him to new heights and establishes him as an international sensation.

19. Jimmy Smits

Jimmy Smits burst onto the scene as Victor Sifuentes in LA Law, embodying every quality you desire in a leading man. With his striking looks, relatable demeanor, magnetic charm, and above all, phenomenal acting skills, he captivated audiences. Following the triumph of LA Law, where he graced the show from 1986 to 1992, Smits briefly explored the world of movies before gracing the small screen once again as Detective Bobby Simone in the immensely popular police procedural NYPD Blue.

Chilean Pascal has achieved remarkable success, venturing into larger and more notable projects. He has graced the silver screen in movies such as Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Triple Frontier, Wonder Woman 1984, and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, co-starring alongside a revitalized Nic Cage. Additionally, he has left his mark in the popular Netflix series Narcos. However, his portrayal of Din Djarin in the Star Wars series The Mandalorian may be considered his finest achievement.
